Erradicación de especies invasoras en el Barranco del Poyo
Invasive Species Eradication in Barranco del Poyo

Year launched:

2018

Location:

Barranco del Poyo, Albufera de Valencia, Spain

Type of project:

Ecosystems and Biodiversity

CAPs generated:

1275

CAPs available:

0 CAPs

Description:

Hydrological rehabilitation and ecological restoration in Barranco del Poyo, the main tributary of the Albufera Natural Park in Valencia. The project focuses on eradicating Arundo donax (giant reed), an invasive species that consumes excessive water and degrades local habitats. Since 2018, efforts have included removing the species, reducing evapotranspiration-induced water loss, and restoring natural river flow. In 2023, maintenance work continued with mechanical and manual removal of reed shoots across 7.26 hectares, followed by native species reforestation and waste cleanup.

Project benefits:

Improved Water Availability: Reduces invasive species’ water consumption and restores natural river flow | Enhanced Biodiversity: Removal of giant reed revives habitats for native flora/fauna. Reforestation with native species and waste cleanup stabilize the ecosystem, fostering sustainability.

Year launched:

2020

Location:

Molins de Rei, Barcelona, Spain

Type of project:

Water efficiency

CAPs generated:

Coming Soon

CAPs available:

Coming Soon CAPs

Description:

Encouraging managed recharge by directing river water into a diversion channel that infiltrates into the aquifer through basins. This aims to improve both the quantitative and chemical status of the aquifer and ensure water supply for various uses, especially during drought periods. This project is part of the European AQUIFER INTERREG SUDOE project and has been approved by the Catalan Water Agency.

Project benefits:

Enhances the quantitative and chemical quality of the Llobregat aquifer through managed recharge, supporting groundwater resource sustainability. – Boosts water availability for various uses, which is especially important during droughts, thereby improving water security. – The intervention along the Llobregat River includes environmental enhancements to improve the health and functionality of the river’s ecosystems.
