Stormwater Harvesting in Cape Town

The retrofitted detention pond at School Pond in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, is a pioneering project led by the Future Water Research Institute to address urban water scarcity through stormwater storage. By retrofitting an existing detention pond, the project significantly enhanced infiltration capacity, enabling recharge of the Cape Flats Aquifer and supporting Cape Town’s water resilience.

CAPs (Credits Aqua Positive), also known as water credits, are a unit that measures the positive impact of projects on water resources.

1 CAP = 1,000 m³ of water footprint saved

CAP eq, or CAP equivalents, are calculated using the ISO 14046 methodology, which adjusts the value of CAPs by considering water stress in the region.
